Why did you join Balfour Beatty Management?
I was attracted by the opportunity to work for the management arm of the industry leading Balfour Beatty Group of companies. In addition, BBM as a young and progressive organisation had attracted a number of the best commercial people I had previously worked with as well as recognised experts from the project management and engineering sectors. On a personal level, I was looking for more of a consultancy role having had previous experience with major contractors where a large part of my day was spent in administering sub-contracts.
What do you enjoy about your current role?
I am enjoying heading up the commercial team for a £120m section of the large and complex Channel Tunnel Rail Link/London Underground Ltd works at King’s Cross. The commercial aspects are varied and challenging and cover design, procurement, installation, commissioning and handover of civil, architectural and mechanical/electrical works.
What key challenges do you face in your role?
On a long and complex project such as this, the design is constantly evolving for example as client standards are updated to reflect the latest in safety, security and technology. This requires a comprehensive change management system, helping to keep the project on programme and within budget.
What training and development have you experienced at Balfour Beatty Management – both technical and soft skills?
Balfour Beatty Management provide eCPD – an internet-based continuous learning regime which covers many subjects relevant to Quantity Surveying, including soft/management skills. BBM also encourage further qualifications by way of subsidised training and are keen on corporate membership. I’ve assisted in providing mock interviews for RICS APC entrants and have recently completed a company subsidised distance learning course in taxation.
How would you describe the culture at Balfour Beatty Management?
One of working together to achieve mutual objectives, with support from senior management and encouragement for continued professional development. I particularly like the openness about where the company is going and would like to go.
