St Enoch's Retail and Leisure Centre

Value:

The project is worth approximately £45m

Timescales:

July 2007 to April 2010

Background:

The St Enoch Centre is situated in a key Glasgow city centre location. Opened in 1989, it is still the largest glass structure in Europe. By improving the existing facilities and extending the current space to 1,000,000 square feet, the redevelopment will transform the centre into a world class retail and leisure destination. The centre will be one of the largest in the UK.

Our brief:

Working with the existing centre management and design team we developed complex phasing plans to permit a complete refurbishment of the existing mall, extensive remodelling and extensions to be carried out while maintaining trading. Much of the work had to be carried out during nightshifts. Following procurement of some 30 work package contractors the project then needed to be completed to a tight programme to allow a re-launch in Autumn 2009.

Services provided:

Management Contracting

Our achievements:

The entire existing glazed building will remain open to the public throughout the demolition and building works. This has increased the challenges faced by the project team. Public safety is of the highest importance. Heery’s team maintain regular contact with the St Enoch Centre Management, the neighbouring properties and Glasgow City Council. We have absorbed many tenant-led changes to the base-build design and mitigated many delays caused by unforeseen structural conditions.

In the long term, we all have to do something different. We must challenge our current working practices, our ownership of health and safety and how each one of us can contribute towards making what we do safer - Zero Harm
